How MCPs are Vctims and not Victimizers

Economics reverberates that efficiency lies in specialization - one should do what one's best at. It's amazing how the same funda applies to household chores. Just as an illustration - Consider a task - to cook omelets. "A" cooks great omelets and B doesn't...so economic theory says that A should take up the task for the economy to be efficient.

Long ago, work was physical in nature. The man, who had more brute force than the woman, specialized in running after animals, tilling the land, breaking stones etc. The woman, less strong, stuck to the softer chores. This had become a way of life. It is to be noted that economics doesn't consider the household chores as economic activity. Economic activity, at this point of time comprised of men’s brute force activities.

Then came the invention of the agricultural tools – work became physically easy for the man. As time progressed, more machines were invented. Work became less physical, and man’s core competency – the physical ability - started to diminish in importance. Men were thrown out of their comfort zone. This was a point where the lifestyle started changing. In other words, the men (and women) had a “Lifestyle Shock”. The shock-recovery process saw men fiddling with the softer chores and women trying their hands at the knowledge work – the economic activity. As time progressed, men and women shared both types of activities delineated by economic theory – the household activities and the economic activities. The basic theory still remained the same – people were still doing what they were best at.

Now, let us define the Male Household-Activity Involvement ratio as MHAI = Household Activity by men/Total Household Activity(Household Activity is measured in seconds). From “Long Ago” to now, this ratio has been on the upward trend, starting at near-zero. 0.5 is what the MHAI is tending to, over time. The MHAI, however, is significantly less than the ideal value of 0.5 at present (random observation of a perfectly sane mind). What does this mean?

Essentially, at present, there are still people (men and women) coming to terms with the Lifestyle Shock. Not long ago, men saw their fathers doing maximal economic activity and minimal household activity; women saw their mothers doing minimal economic activity and maximal household activity. While some of these men (and women) have adapted well to the changing times, some are still in the "Shock" phase. These people who couldn't adjust are suffering from an illness (Common symptoms of the illness include the use of brute force against the fairer sex by men, and the lack of interest in education for the women). They are the victims of changing times - they are sick. Unfortunately, it's really heartening that the male victims, who are obviously sick, are further victimized by the usage of a very hard-hitting phrase - Male Chauvinist Pig (MCP). This terminology doesn't make their adaptation easy - it complicates the matters.

Now, what exactly can a fellow human being do to make the transition of these victims easy? Firstly, one should refrain from using the phrase Male Chauvinist Pig (MCP). What if one calls the women undergoing the lifestyle shock - Female Petrified Owls (FPOs)? Hurts doesn’t it? Secondly, take time out and explain how the economic theory functions. Tell them that they have a Hobson's choice - Adapt or Perish! Thirdly, if the MHAI of your house is greater than or equal to 0.5, REJOICE, for there are no victims in your house! Lastly, pat me on my back whenever you manage to meet me. ;)

i like the way you put across your observation.

however i can still not infer (from ur blog) an mcp as a 'victim'.

however i like the new term 'fpo'. it is humorous and equals as an answer perfectly to 'mcp'

since i already confessed my reaction towards the 'fpo', irrespective of my gender, does it categorise me as an 'mcp'?

"Victims of changing times"...

Yeah...FPO is a gem of a word!

And...reacting to FPO doesn't classify u as an MCP...but buying into the logic of this post makes u a non-MCP. U've just attained salvation, my friend! :D

the entire economics applied here and evolution of MHAI and "shocks" is v logical accepted!
but why they are victims is still nt clear ??, and explaining this theory to these MCPs (oops !) is not easy !!
and FPO is a good invention btw.
:)

Hmmm I know both the sides of the coins now (the posts actually) both of them are right at their own places but I think this MCP and FPO both need to leave their egos aside and both should come half way of the path and make the most of the life :)

Wah Wah :D
By the way, isn't household activity also economic. Its implicit rather than explicit.
Accepting the assumption - that men are good at physical work and women more fragile should not be employed in that.
In the current times, household chores are more physical than cognitive economic activity. So rather than a shock, men should ease into the new found domain of physical toil and leave the frail cognitive work to women. Economicaly speaking!

Nice to see some comments down here!

@Pooja
Take the colonization of India as an example. When the EI company entered the Indian market, the old khadi industries got wiped out. They were the victims of the changing times. Similarly, the ppl you call MCPs are the victims of the lifestyle shock. And...thanks! FPO is a brain-quake...something much more than a brain-wave. :P

@Isha
Ladki...u got the funda of FPO wrong. They have no ego. They are the perfect marriage material for the MCPs. And...there's no compromise to be had...MCPs are a force that's gonna die out...getting infected with "lifestyle shock" is synonymous to getting infected with cancer...there's no damn cure. We, as fellow human beings should shower them with sympathy rather than scoff at them.

@mi3
Actually, what u've said is the purpose of this post. In the present economic conditions, men specialize at some household work, and women specialize at other household work. Economics says one should do what one specializes in.
For a harmonious matrimonial life, there should be pre-marital discussions on the division of labor - SWOT analyses should be carried out.

On the FPO's funda...Petrified = shocked, Owl ~ afraid to venture into the light (economic activity)

I loved the concept of FPO .. absolutely brilliant!!

apart from that, though its a good read, I didn't really get how MCP's are victims.. I sure hope ithinkthereforeiam attains salvation though.. :D

Hmm, I don't think calling a guy an MCP hurts them in anyway...they seem completely oblivious to it...but even though am a female, I loved FPO :D

Hi, Got your blog as forward from mythri.

Loved the FPO thing.

Your argument seems to be logical but it assumes that there were no MCPs in the "Long ago" time. Also, in rural areas where most of the work is physical we do have MCPs. so they are not born out of shock but been there since long. n I feel getting the MCPs to marry FPOs would be a solution too.

hello,
nic way of presentation....

really liked FPO as others..
well getting MPO married to FPO wud b d worst thing...
